In this activity students are asked to use sound to communicate without talking. Some of the tools the students can use include musical instruments like the drum.
I helped create the story behind the activity. Quite a few animals were considered for the role of "main character" but after some brainstorming Adventure Otter came to light. Adventure Otter must help her friends Beaver and Frog maneuver a dangerous river. Using sounds to give instructions to her friends Adventure Otter is able to communicate when they should swim or stop in order to make it arcross the river safely. To the left is the young Adventure Otter that I illustrated. She has a badge, a vest to keep her safe in the water, a rope, and a utility belt to hold her rope. Adventure Otter is ready to go! |
The Bad BearOriginally the antagonist of the story was a grumpy bear who was fishing in the river. Adventure Otter would have to use various sounds to communicate with her friends. The sounds would tell her friends when it was safe to move around the bear to get across safely. In the end we agreed that the bear wouldn't work but I still illustrated him during the planning process.

This is a friend of Adventure Otter's that I illustrated. The beaver needs help crossing the river but can't do it without a little assistance. With the help of her purple life vest and the leadership of Adventure Otter she can make it safely across the troublesome river. |
Friend FrogFrog
This is a friend of Adventure Otter and Friend Beaver's that I illustrated. With the help of a life vest and the leadership of Adventure Otter, Friend Frog can make it across the river safely. |
